What needs mulching?

At this time of year in the northern hemisphere, the garden quickens. Weeds spring up almost overnight. Tender shoots push up through the soil. Bare branches unfurl into soft, pleated green.

The return of light brings a surge of energy to the garden. But not all of it is helpful.

This is the perfect moment for a spring mulch.

Mulch is a protective layer of bark chippings, straw, or compost laid over the soil.
Supressing what would otherwise take over, and nourishing what we want to grow.

Mulch helps the soil retain moisture, and creates conditions for fungi, earthworms and other unseen helpers to thrive. It feeds the system, while gently holding boundaries.

A seasonal reflection:
What in your life wants nourishing and protecting right now?
And what needs suppressing or ending to allow this to thrive?

Coming up

23rd April: Endings & transitions for sustainability professionals, London

Next week, Tending to Endings co-creator Heather will be hosting an evening workshop exploring endings and transitions for sustainability professionals.

Despite years of effort setting targets, building frameworks, reporting year on year, emissions are still rising and nature continues to decline.

This evening offers space to delve into various frameworks and tools - including the Tending to Endings cards - and thoughtful dialogue with peers to gain clarity, connection and fresh insights.

🗓️   Thursday 23 April, 6:30–9:30pm
📍   Treo House, London

Starting 20th May: From Control to Cultivation — Join the upcoming pilot cohot

Later in May, co-creator Will is piloting a series of workshops designed to help you go deeper with ‘garden thinking’ in your own context.

We’ll explore how eco-systemic perspectives — including Tending to Endings and other tools — can be applied in practice in organisations, teams, and professional development. The starting question: What happens when you stop trying to engineer culture and start cultivating it instead?

The series is designed for practitioners who work with organisations — coaches, facilitators, consultants, OD professionals. It will also be relevant if you're a leader responsible for how your team develops and thinks together.

If that sounds like you or someone you know, and you’d like access to early-bird pricing, register your interest here.

🗓️   Wednesdays, 6:30–8pm:
May 20th, May 27th, June 3rd

Prototype cards available

We have a small number of prototype Tending to Endings card decks available for those based in the UK. If you’ve been wanting to explore the cards in your own time, or bring them into your work, you can order a set below.

Please note, this is limited to UK orders only — we’re not able to ship overseas currently, but we’ll be releasing a digital set of cards later this Spring.

What we've been up to…

Developing Facilitator Guidelines
In the nine months since we first put our prototype packs in the world, we’ve been gathering rich community feedback and wisdom. We’re consolidating it all into a new Facilitator guidelines, launching in the coming weeks, alongside a refreshed deck (with a few structural changes - more on that to follow!) Our aim is to offer a how-to that can help anyone, no matter their expertise, use the cards with creativity and care.

‘What is a Good Life?’ podcast
What does a truly good life look like - and how do we find our way back to it? Tending to Endings co-creator Ally speaks to Mark McCartney about recovering the capacity for "right relationship" with ourselves, with nature, with community, and with something greater. Listen now.

Recently: Spring Equinox Supper
Last month, Heather co-hosted a Spring Equinox supper at Vivobarefoot's nature HQ — an evening of nourishment, reflection, and meaningful conversation for sustainability professionals in the Bristol area.

In a time of polycrisis and transition, knowing what to let go of is as important as knowing what to build. Over supper, guests explored what needed composting and hospicing in their work and industries, and where their energy is best placed now. The evening wove together frameworks including the Wheel of the Year and the Berkana Two Loops model, before the Tending to Endings cards made an appearance over dessert.

We’d love to hear what’s been stirring for you. What are you taking care of in these turbulent times? And how have you been using the cards? We always love to hear from you.

With care, as we each tend what’s ours to nourish, mulch, and let go,

Heather, Ally & Will
