Hi friend,

It certainly feels like Autumn has arrived, here in the UK — which is the time of year that Tending to Endings comes into its own 🍂

The trees are shedding their leaves, which will decompose and nourish the soil. And as the days shorten, many of us find Autumn ripe for turning inwards and reflecting on the role that endings play in our lives.

This week, we’re pleased to share some upcoming events that we’re involved with, as well as a bit of reading inspiration :)

Do you work in the museums sector? We’ve got an upcoming workshop for you!

Join us online — on Tuesday 11th November at 12:30pm — for a workshop exploring how we close, dispose, and end well in museums.

We’re excited to be running this workshop in partnership with our friends at the Happy Museum Project. If you work in the museum sector, or if you know someone who does, please do spread the word and come along!

The workshop will be 90 minutes, and tickets are £10.

Say hi to us this week at the Deceleration Assembly!

Endings are inevitable.

Bad endings don’t have to be.

The Decelerator

If you’re working with endings in an organisational context, we highly recommend that you check out The Decelerator, who are doing excellent and pioneering work in this space.

This week on Wednesday, they’re hosting a gathering of over 100 endings practitioners for an assembly in Birmingham. We’ll be there and will be hosting a session in the afternoon to explore fresh ways of working with the cards in organisational contexts.

The event is now sold out, but if you happen to also be going, do make sure to come and say hi to us - and join our session to get hands on with like-minded others.

What we’re reading

Tending to Endings owes a great deal to the work of others. We thought it would be nice to recommend some of the books that have been inspiring us recently, which include:

  • Outgrowing Modernity, by Vanessa Machado de Oliveira

    • The sleeves-up follow-on to the acclaimed Hospicing Modernity, this is a shot of probiotic for those wrestling with how to face the violence and unsustainability of our age head-on.

  • At Work in the Ruins, by Dougald Hine

    • This has been a real anchor for our team: a book that suggests life in the ruins of a collapsing system can be not only worth living, but deeply meaningful.

  • The Well-Gardened Mind, by Sue Stuart-Smith

    • Another guiding text for the Tending to Endings team, Sue’s profound meditation on the garden as learning space expanded our appreciation for the healing powers of the garden.

We highly recommend all of them! Do try and buy from an independent bookstore, if you can :)

Stay tuned for some exciting news later this month 👀

That’s all for this week, but keep your eyes peeled for some big announcements later this month…

With heart,
Will, Ally & Heather
